Why is Abrasive Wheel Training so important?

2 November 2026

Abrasive wheels are used across a wide range of industries, from construction to engineering. However, using this equipment incorrectly can lead to serious injuries, making appropriate training an important part of workplace safety.

Employers have a responsibility to ensure staff understand how to use abrasive wheels safely. For businesses looking to deliver this training in-house, our Abrasive Wheel Train the Trainer course provides the knowledge and skills needed to train their own employees.

Why is abrasive wheel training important?

Abrasive wheels can cause serious harm if they are selected or used incorrectly. Staff need to understand the hazards involved and know how to handle the equipment safely. Employers also have legal responsibilities to consider. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) require employers to ensure staff receive adequate health and safety training for using work equipment. The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 also sets out employers’ wider responsibilities for workplace health and safety.

Providing suitable instruction helps employees understand the risks associated with abrasive wheels and how to work safely when using them.

What does our Abrasive Wheel Train the Trainer course cover?

Our two-day, RoSPA Assured course is designed to prepare staff to deliver abrasive wheel training within their own organisation. It is suitable for beginners as well as those with previous experience. The course covers the different types of abrasive wheels and how to identify them through their markings. Attendees also learn correct handling and storage, along with the safe mounting and inspection of wheels.

The training explores relevant health and safety legislation and covers equipment such as angle and bench grinders, chop saws and petrol cutters. Importantly, the course also focuses on the trainer role. Delegates learn how to structure and deliver their own training sessions, with practical assessments included as part of the course.

Who can benefit from the course?

The course is suitable for people who need to train colleagues in the safe use of abrasive wheels. This may include workplace trainers or employees responsible for health and safety within industries where this equipment is regularly used.

On successful completion, attendees receive RoSPA Assured National Training Services Instructor Certification, which is valid for three years. They also receive training materials to help them deliver their own sessions, with post-course support available from NTS.
