Who is City & Guilds?

12 September 2023

Here at National Training Services, we specialise in supplying the Train the Trainer syllabuses people, and the organisations they serve, need to provide their own courses competently and confidently. As well as being delivered by our experienced in-house trainers and offering the free post-course support that’s required to thrive, our programs are approved by City and Guilds.

Our affiliation with City and Guilds means the training you receive and complete - and the accreditation you are awarded as a result - is recognisable to all, including the people you are charged with training.

But who is City and Guilds, and why do they have such clout? In this blog post, we answer these very questions…

An introduction to City and Guilds

The City and Guilds of London Institute – known simply as ‘City and Guilds’ for short – is an educational organisation, Royal Chartered Institute and registered charity that has been serving the UK for more than 140 years.

It’s their mission to collaborate with people and organisations to develop the skills needed to succeed in their respective industry sector. They work with training providers like us to deliver learning programmes that are quality assured and fully assessed.

The history of City and Guilds

City and Guilds was founded back in 1878, when the City of London Corporation and 16 Livery Companies, the trade guilds, came together to create an organisation centred around the delivery of quality training.

Its foundation was inspired by the Industrial Revolution and the sudden boom in industry that resulted. During this time, people and the businesses they worked for needed support, and with this, a gap in the market for professional training became apparent.

The City and Guilds’ links with the Royal Family – starting with its first president King Edward VII to its current President and patronage Her Royal Highness Princess Royal – have seen the institute go from strength to strength ever since.

City and Guilds in the modern day

Decades later, City and Guilds still plays an active role in the delivery of professional training, and ensures the highest standards are maintained to facilitate the strongest prospects for jobs and growth. With City and Guilds approved courses like ours, people can achieve their potential and serve the industry sectors they reside in to the best of their abilities.

All NTS Training courses are City and Guilds approved. To find out more about our City and Guilds Train the Trainer programs, please contact us today.
