What is Manual Handling?

Manual Handling has a place in every aspect of our lives, whenever one moves an object, that can be deemed as a Manual Handling operation. Most think of Manual Handling simply as lifting, this is not the case, the following definition is from the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and states :-

""manual handling operations" means any transporting or supporting of a load (including the lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving thereof) by hand or by bodily force."

Why do we need Manual Handling Training?

If you are an employer or have a responsibility for the welfare of your staff some form of manual handling instruction or risk assessment is essential to preventing injury to exposed parties.

There were 56,748 injuries reported in 2003/4 relating to handling operations. These are just reported injuries and do not account for those suffered in the home or by self employed people.
